The impact of the Ukrainian refugee crisis on the security dimension in Romania during 2022-2023

by Rareș-Alexandru Văscan, Claudia Anamaria Iov, Claudia Anamaria Iov,

The European Union and its Member States are currently facing an unprecedented migration phenomenon, a refugee crisis in Ukraine triggered by the Russian Federation’s military invasion of Ukraine that began in February 2022. This ongoing military conflict has created the biggest humanitarian crisis in modern European history, resulting in many casualties and population movements outside Ukraine’s borders. Although we believe that the institutions of the European Union have previously managed a similar event, the Syrian refugee crisis, in an effective way, the current refugee crisis, the second one in the last ten years, shows that international migration should be seen from the perspective of a threat to European security, quickly becoming one of the main issues, and certainly one of the most contested, in current times. The objective of our paper is to analyze the relationship between migration and security and to examine the impact that the refugee crisis in Ukraine has on the dimensions of security in Romania.
