Call for Special Issue Contributions – From Democracy to e-Democracy: How Social Technologies and Media Interact with Democracy

Romanian Journal of Political Science invites scholars to contribute to the Special Issue From Democracy to e-Democracy. This compendium will pursue the question of how social technologies and media interact with democracy.

In recent years, digitalization has gone from a simple process to the status quo and a whole digital world, so that it appears to be one of the few sure constants of the future. As a result, the terrain of democracy cannot remain unaffected by the specific processes of digitalization and technologization. Social processes, as essential element of democracy, have thus taken on new dimensions through the formalization of socialization in the new space created by technological advancements, by the Internet of Things (IoT) and by Web 2.0.

In sum, social technology comprises the totality of technological means for the facilitation of social interaction. In the context of the processes specific to democracy, we might mention: social networks, forums, blogs, fact-checking sites, applications, and videoconference platforms. Even if this is not its principal purpose, the utilization of social technologies seeks to influence the social processes of democracy through the use of digital resources.

The present issue seeks to offer a comprehensive vision of the impact of social technologies on the principle subthemes of democracy, including but not limited to: the rule of law, electoral processes, citizens’ rights and freedoms, etc.

We are seeking articles which study the following themes:

  • social media as bidirectional communication platforms between citizens and policy-makers;
  • the extension of the networks of civil society through the use of digital means;
  • digital media and democratic society;
  • fake news, propaganda — from freedom to risk;
  • digital society and political correctness — opportunities and problems;
  • e-government and online participatory processes;
  • the phenomenon of fake news and the fight against it;
  • the limits of freedom of expression and the censorship of major social media platforms.

Variations on these themes will also be taken into consideration.
